Huambo - Registration for the first African book biennial, to be held from 4 to 16 April this year in the central province of Huambo, began on Wednesday for writers, publishers, actors, artists and public and private companies to take part.

The information was provided to ANGOP by the person in charge of the event, Nituecheni Africano, pseudonym of Eugénio Afonso Gaspar, who emphasised that the event is an initiative of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and hopes to bring together more than 200 cultural agents and personalities from the African, American and European continents.

He said that registration is taking place at the Huambo Provincial Library and on digital platforms until 2 April, adding that writers, publishers, bookshops and institutions, despite having personal and institutional documents, must pay a sum of between 10,000 and 15,000 kwanzas.

According to the official, the 12-day event, with the motto "An Africa at peace and without war", will be held at the Manuel Rui Monteiro Cultural Centre in the city of Huambo, given its tourist and accommodation conditions for the presentation of literary and craft works, exhibitions of theatrical arts, among others.

Nituecheni Africano emphasised that the first African book biennial - Angola 2024 - will transform Huambo province into the capital of national and international tourism and culture.

He said that it will cover topics such as "Technological diversity and inclusive literature for a united Africa without war" and "Artificial intelligence", as well as bringing together theatre makers, dancers, musicians, artists and other performing arts from Africa, Europe and America in one place.

It will feature interactive spaces such as the "Literary Café", which will invite renowned African and Brazilian authors, writers and singers to discuss current affairs.

The book biennale is a literary and cultural event that takes place every two years and brings together publishers, exhibitors and various professionals, such as authors and illustrators.

The focus of this type of event is books and artists as well, who share their stories, trajectories and creations.
