Luanda - The book "The Revolution will be a poetic act", by Angolan politician and intellectual Mário Pinto de Andrade, linked to the Négritude (Blackness) and Pan-African movement since the 1950s, was launched this Tuesday in the United Kingdom.

Under the auspices of publisher Polity Books, the book is a compilation of essays written by Mário Pinto de Andrade in Portuguese and French.

In particular, essays focused on issues of the development of African culture were selected, starting with the preface he wrote for the Notebook of black poetry of Portuguese expression (1953) and ending with his reflections on Amílcar Cabral in the 80s.

The selection and translation of the texts into English were carried out by professors Lanie Miller and Fabienne Moore, both from the University of Oregon (USA).

As Miller commented, Mário Pinto de Andrade's texts had not yet been published together, so the purpose of this volume is “to give an idea of the extent and complexity of his works, the development of his thought and his participation in international conversations held in the 20th century.”

Miller highlighted that, during this period, the presence of the Lusophone world was almost invisible to the Anglophone field.

“The revolution will be a poetic act”, by Mário Pinto de Andrade, is part of the “Critical South” series, by Polity Books, whose self-introduction says: - “The collection publishes texts originating from important traditions of critical thought that emerge from the southern hemisphere, but which, in general, are unknown to the English-speaking participants in these discussions.

Thus, such essays, translated into English, contribute to redefining and updating the global focus of critical thinking”.

Angolan politician and intellectual, Mário Pinto de Andrade was the first president of the MPLA, Angola’s rulling party.
