Diplomats: India’s Modi cancels visit to EU summit in Porto

  • Narendra Modi, President of India
ndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has canceled a visit to the Portuguese city of Porto next month for a summit with leaders from the 27 EU member countries, three diplomats told POLITICO.

It's unclear whether the visit will take place on a later date, but one of the diplomats said it would be difficult to organize it virtually. The Portuguese permanent representation to the EU has not responded to requests for comment. India's embassy also had no immediate comment.

The change of plan was prompted by India's rapidly worsening coronavirus outbreak. On Monday, India suffered a record-breaking 273,810 new daily infections. The total number of confirmed cases is more than 15 million.

Modi's no-show will be a blow to Portugal's original plan to make the India summit the diplomatic highlight of its six-month EU Council presidency.

The news came on the same day that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also canceled his plan to visit New Delhi. Last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping also canceled a planned summit with all EU leaders in Leipzig, Germany, owing to the pandemic.
