Luanda - Angola's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, Francisco da Cruz, this Tuesday in this North American city considered Brazil's presidency of the G20 as the rise of the countries of the "Global South" in the world stage and an opportunity to strengthen its voice on critical and urgent issues such as development, climate change, debt and the redefinition of international relations.

According to a press release, sent to ANGOP today, the diplomat made these considerations, when speaking at the meeting called by the President of the General Assembly, in which the lead negotiator of the G20 presidency, ambassador Maurício Lyrio, presented the priorities of the Brazilian presidency in the group.

On the occasion, Francisco da Cruz recalled that at the G20 meeting held in Brazil last month, Angola again called for an urgent reform of the international financial architecture, including its governance structure, in order to make it equitable and capable of respond to the financing needs of developing countries.

“In our opinion, the current financial structure does not offer solutions to the challenges that the Global South (developing countries) face and needs to be redesigned to guarantee its effectiveness”, he highlighted.

Furthermore, he continued, multilateral development banks also need to be reviewed and recapitalized to respond to the needs of low and middle income countries.

He highlighted that the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund are called to contribute more actively to the stability and economic prosperity of all nations.

The comprehensive reform of International Financial Institutions is, according to Francisco da Cruz, a long-standing requirement to be aligned with the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter and international law.

Regarding the Global Alliance against hunger and poverty, he reaffirmed that Angola supports the initiative proposed by Brazil, which aims to allow equitable access to sustainable development, mobilizing international efforts and resources to support countries in implementing effective public policies for eradication of these evils, as well as reducing inequalities.

The objective is to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by 2030.

In his speech, Ambassador Francisco da Cruz highlighted the role of the United Nations as fundamental in supporting this initiative, both in the implementation and operational phases.

He noted that the effects of the debt burden are not limited to the financial, as they compromise investments in education, health and basic infrastructure, thus negatively impacting social and economic development.

In this context, he defended a continuous approach to debt vulnerabilities in low- and middle-income countries, as one of the priorities of the G20 under Brazil's presidency.

“The energy transition is also at risk due to lack of resources, compromising climate objectives and causing devastating global consequences”, he highlighted.

The permanent representative of Angola reiterated that Angola counts on the Brazilian presidency of the G20 to strengthen the least developed countries to eliminate poverty, promote shared prosperity and strengthen human-centered development to leave no one behind.
