Abu Dhabi - Angolan oil sector remains focused on the decarbonisation process of the industry, with a view to reducing the emission of harmful gases in the environment, the minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, said Monday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The minister, who is part of the Angolan delegation participating in the 2023 Sustainability Week taking place in the UAE, said the Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas sector is already working together with partners towards the decarbonisation of the industry.

The Angolan minister pointed out as an example of this joint action, the growing commitment to solar energy production, green hydrogen (generated by renewable energy) and the planting of mangroves.

The challenge of providing energy in a Sustainable Way

The minister for Energy and Waters, João Baptista Borges, who is also part of the Angolan delegation, said the country currently has 64 percent of environmentally-friendly sources of energy supply.

"We’ll certainly pass 70 percent with the projects we have", the minister said, adding that energy sustainability "has to be guaranteed not only by building infrastructures", but by a number of factors.

Among the set of factors, the minister mentioned  the strengthening of institutional capacity and training of staff that, in his opinion, would contribute to energy security and to obtaining clean and cheap electricity.

Reforestation and Transport

The minister of Environment, Paula Francisco Coelho, on her turn, acknowledged that there is a lot to do in reforestation and waste treatment.

The Transport minister, Ricardo Abreu, said that the transport sector contributes 25 percent to greenhouse gas emissions all over the world, and so due to this fact the transport sector should be linked to the energy transition process.

The minister announced for this year the implementation of the electro-mobility strategy, which will allow for the orderly introduction of electric vehicles in Angola.

"It is a process that will happen gradually", the minister explained, adding that public and goods transportations vehicles will be favoured during the implementation process.

Mr Abreu went on to explain that regions will also be prioritised according to their level of development.

The mechanism covers what the minister considered "energy transition at the level of green (environmentally friendly) infrastructures".

"We are talking about airports, ports, all those infrastructures that also have to present clean energy supply solutions", the minister said.
