Uíge – At least 140 human trafficking cases have been registered in the country, since 2014, by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, informed this Tuesday in Uige City the secretary of State for Human Rights and Citizenship, Ana Celeste Januário.

Of the total number of cases, only 22 resulted in the trial and conviction of the perpetrators of this crime, said the official when speaking at the opening of the seminar on human trafficking, victim protection and assistance.

She informed that this crime occurs mainly in Luanda and those provinces bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo Brazzaville, Namibia and Zambia.

As for the victims, she pointed to children and women as the preference of the human traffickers, who use victims for child exploitation, domestic servitude, forced labour, sexual exploitation and other deplorable acts.

Ana Celeste pointed out the use of social media as one of the main vehicles for the perpetration of this crime, for that reason, she appealed to the population to use such tool correctly, avoiding contact with strangers.

On his turn, the deputy governor for the Political, Economic and Social sectors, Maria Cavungo, defended the need to improve the methods of action of the bodies that contribute to the fight against trafficking of human beings.

The seminar will address human trafficking in Angola, in Namibia and the DRC, international legal framework on human trafficking, migratory flow along the common border and procedures for the establishment of the reference mechanism for the protection and assistance of victims of trafficking, among other topics.

The meeting counts on the participation of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), national directors of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, defence and security bodies, traditional authorities, civil society and other guests.
