Luanda - The MPLA has pledged to make “a considered reading” of its path over the last five years and to “improve public service provision”, said on Thursday, in Luanda, the party’s politburo secretary for information, Rui Falcão.
The politician was reacting to the latest provisional update of the election results by the National Electoral Commission (CNE), which gave the MPLA 51.07% of the votes that enables it to elect 124 deputies for the 2022-2027 term, a reduction of 26 compared to 2017-2022.
He said that the MPLA would “redirect some actions”, to reverse the situation in the future and, despite the figures, he was pleased with the confirmation of his party´s victory by the results announce by the CNE, with an absolute majority, which “gives it the required comfort” to rule Angola for the next five years.
Until the last update of the results, the CNE had counted 97.03 of the votes cast in the ballot that had the participation of 6.379,309 voters, according to the spokesman of the electoral body, Lucas Quilundo.
“We are all satisfied, and I want to take the opportunity, on behalf of the Political Bureau, to thank all our militant mass and the citizens who voted for the MPLA, in the conviction that we will do everything to build a better country”, he expressed.
He said it was “a significant victory” that allowes MPLA to work, and said that “an analysis will be made, in a pondered way, to assess where we went wrong and where we were less lucky”.
However, Rui Falcão said that most parties in the world govern with an absolute majority and that the MPLA was one of the exceptions, until now governing Angola with a qualified majority.
“Democracy is just that, one day you win and another day you lose. You have to know how to be in a democracy and this is another lesson that everyone must learn. We are humble enough to recognise how much the people have done for the MPLA, and we will do everything we can to repay them”, he said.
On fraud accusations by UNITA, Rui Falcão recalled that even before the election this opposition party was already alleging fraud.
Seven political parties, namely MPLA, UNITA, PRS, FNLA, APN, PHA, P-NJANGO and the CASA-CE coalition competed in this election.
These are the fifth elections that have been held in Angola, which for the first time included voting in the Angolan diaspora.
