Luanda - US Congresswoman Karen Bass on Saturday in Luanda encouraged the political, economic and social reforms carried out by the Angolan Government since President João Lourenço took over power in September 2017.

Karen Bass, who heads a delegation composed of seven congressmen from the United States of America (USA), was received this Saturday, by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, with whom she addressed the strengthening of cooperation between the two countries.

"There are several ways in which we can cooperate. The most important is to strengthen the presence of American companies and investments in Angola," the congresswoman said.

Karen Bass, who is chairwoman of the subcommittee on Africa, Global Health and Human Rights, reiterated the total support of US institutions for Angola's financial system and electrification.

In another aspect, she highlighted the Angolan Head of State's commitment in the search for solutions for peace, stability and security in Southern and Central Africa, as President in office of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).

US Congress

The United States Congress is a legislative body consisting of two chambers, being the Senate and the House of Representatives.

In general, senators and representatives are elected by direct vote, although some Senate seats are filled by State nomination.

Congress has 535 voting members, of which 435 are Representatives and 100 are Senators.

Angola-US Relations

Angola and the US established formal diplomatic relations in 1993. The energy sector is at the centre of Angolan-American relations.

Since 2002, the United States' foreign policy objectives in Angola have been to promote and strengthen democratic institutions, economic prosperity, improve health, as well as consolidate peace and security.

The US has also participated, in partnership with Angola, in the removal of landmines.

The American Exim Bank has a credit line to support American exports to Angola.

In his turn, the United States-Angola Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to promoting trade and investment between the two countries.
