Menongue - Delegations from the province of Cuando Cubango (Angola) and three regions of Namibia Wednesday in Menongue recommended strengthening measures to prevent and combat cross-border crimes, with a view to consolidating bilateral relations.

The measure is expressed in the final communiqué of the 1st meeting on assessment of the state of bilateral relations on the border region of Cuando Cubango  and the regions of Kavango East, Otjozondjupa and Zambezi (Namibia), held between 13 and 14 in  Menongue, capital of Cuando Cubango.

The participants also recommended fight against drug and fuel smuggling, sharing information on Angolans detained and sentenced for migration offences and related crimes.

The parties also stressed the need to speed up the ratification of the agreement on the extradition of prisoners by Namibia.

Also recommended the promotion of awareness campaigns and dissemination of the migration laws of the Republics of Angola and Namibia on the dangers of illegal migration for citizens living along the common border and beyond.

The meeting also analysed the need to install more border posts in neighbouring communities.

The delegations propose that the crossing pass issued to nationals by the Migration and Foreigners Service should be valid for a distance of 200 kilometres, instead of the current 60.

On issues linked to education, health, commerce, agriculture, livestock and fishing along the border, they propose that the supervisory bodies of the two countries ensure a travel agreement, which will allow special movement of students, teachers and patients.

The goal is to do away with the bureaucratic acts that in many cases have led to abnormal situations.
