Maputo - Mozambique’s ruling FRELIMO party was invited as an observer in the general elections that will take place on 24 August in Angola.
The invitation was extended by secretary of the ruling MPLA party’s Political Bureau for International Relations, Manuel Augusto, on Saturday, in Maputo.
Manuel Augusto was speaking during a fraternisation lunch as part of the celebrations of the 47th anniversary of Mozambique's Independence, proclaimed by Samora Machel, on June 25, 1975.
“Angola holds its fifth general elections on August 24 this year and we rely, as in the past, on a FRELIMO delegation in electoral observation process”, he said.
The politician, who was flanked by the former president of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano, reiterated that the MPLA is working hard to win the election in an expressive way.
The party wants to continue to implement its governance programme focused on the harmonious and sustainable development of Angola, stressed the politician.
The BP Secretary, representing the President of the MPLA, João Lourenço, stressed the willingness to continue working on strengthening the friendship, solidarity and cooperation relations that exist between MPLA and FRELIMO and both peoples.
The celebrations of the 60th anniversary of FRELIMO and the 47th of independence take place at a time when the Mozambican defence and security forces who confront a group of insurgents engaged in terrorist attacks in the districts to the south of Cabo Delgado (eastern-far province of Mozambique).
According to the Mozambican Head of State, Filipe Nyusi, combating armed groups is a priority in his country.
RELIMO was founded on June 25, 1962, in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, by Eduardo Mondlane, with the aim of fighting for Mozambique's independence from Portuguese colonial rule.
