Caála – The Archbishop of Huambo, Dom Zeferino Zeca Martins, appealed to the Catholic Church faithful to do its part to ensure that the general elections on the 24th of this month take place in a civic and peaceful atmosphere.

Speaking Sunday at the closing homily of the pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Hill (Nossa Senhora do Monte), in the Municipality of Caála, which has reopened after being closed for two years due to Covid-19, Dom Zeferino Zeca Martins urged the
faithful to be examples of forgiveness and peace, through the promotion of mutual respect and the permanent search for civic culture and national unity, regardless of party affiliation.

“Each Angolan, starting with the Christians, must live this electoral period with great calm, respect and civility”, he stressed.

The Archbishop said it is important that the interests of the Nation be above those of political parties, to show the world the development of an Angola that is “truly democratic and moving towards social progress”.

The Nossa Senhora do Monte Sanctuary, located on Mbandjela Hill, began to be built in 1927, during which time the area was looked after by priest Domingos Vieira Baião, a missionary of the Congregation of the Priests of the Holy Spirit, residing in the Catholic Mission of Cuando, on the outskirts of the city of Huambo.

The MPLA, UNITA, PRS, FNLA, APN, PHA and P-NJANGO parties and the CASA-CE coalition are running for the general elections on the 24th of this month, in which 14,399,000 people are registered to vote.
