Luena - The President of Angola’s rulig MPLA party, João Lourenço, Saturday in eastern Moxico Province called for greater focus on agribusiness, taking into account the favourable conditions of the country.
Speaking at a mass rally in Luena City, as part of MPLA's pre-campaign for the general elections of August 2022, João Lourenço said the country, as a whole, has conditions for agriculture, with main focus on the production of cereals.
The MPLA leader added that the government will create incentives to allow the private sector (national and foreign businesspeople) to strongly invest in agribusiness, taking into account Angola's potential.
"The country has conditions to leverage agribusiness. We have abundant water, arable land, and a favourable climate for agriculture. We have a country with potential to stop importing and produce for export", Mr Lourenço stressed.
To him, this is a task that cannot be for the government alone, but also for businesspeople, while the government is expected to create policies and incentives to foster investment intended for agriculture.
João Lourenço went on to specify that there is a need to put an end to the "false idea” that agriculture is only feasible in some provinces of the country such as Huambo, Bié, Cuanza Norte, Malanje and Uíge.
"The eastern provinces have excellent conditions for agriculture; they have a lot of potential in terms of arable lands, a vast and rich water flow and climate conditions that favour and entice agribusiness", Mr Lourenço added.
The MPLA leader also defended the need to apply the necessary measures against deforestation, having urged wood businessmen to join the agriculture sector.
