Lubango - Construction work on the ring road that will pass by the outskirts of Lubango City to make traffic flow more smoothly was visited Wednesday by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, who observed the progress of the work.

The project includes the construction of level crossing, roundabouts at junction points with other roads and additional infrastructure.

The work began in October 2014 and is being supervised by three consortiums, which includes the Angolan Roads Institute (INEA), supervised by the Ministry of Construction.

The project with Portuguese funding is in its first phase and nine of the 38 kilometres that make up the ring road have already been paved.

So far 12 kilometres of earthworks have been laid and awaiting asphalting, as well as one bridge, of the eight that will be built, has been concluded.

Another advance is the placement of public lighting posts along the section.

Data from INEA indicates that the work, with 200 workers, is progressing at a good pace, with the expectation that within 18 months it will be concluded, with benefits for the movement of people and goods, without passing through the urban area.

The road begins in the Arimba area and passes through the centralities of Eiwa and Quilemba, Senhora do Monte and the Tundavala stadium, connecting the National Roads (EN) 105 and 280, in the connections with Cunene, Huambo, Benguela and Namibe.

As part of the project, the links with the existing road network include the construction of an out of level junction and the remaining level crossings of the roundabout type or entry and exit.

Work on the Lubango ring road, which was at a halt for five years, re-started in the second quarter of 2022, after an announcement of a funding line from Portugal for its conclusion.

Until it came to a halt, only 26 kilometres had been budgeted for, at an initial cost of 4.3 billion kwanzas.

All of the technical components, including construction of a level crossing over the railway line in Arimba municipality, public lighting (in areas considered urban), pavements and kerbs are safeguarded.
