Luanda - Angolan State recovered on 2017-2021 period about USD 13 billion that had been unlawfully transferred abroad, the director of National Asset Recovery Service of the Attorney General´s Office (PGR), Eduarda Rodrigues has said.

Speaking at the ceremony to launch Support Project for Strengthening of National Asset Forfeiture System in Angola (Pro.React), Eduarda Rodrigues put at USD 6 billion the amount in real state and monetary values recovered in the country.

She also said that 350 million of this amount was delivered voluntarily.

The official said that the Angolan State saved, in the latest four years, at least USD 12 million/year, with the use of the properties recovered following the process of combat corruption.

As for the constraints in the recovery of assets, the director pointed out the slowness of the legal proceedings which often forced the petition of delays in several countries requesting the return of the monetary values.

The three-year project is funded by European Union (EU) and is meant to develop an effective system to fight against the illicit financial flow and contribute to the economic increase and reduction of poverty.

The initiative is part of combat the corruption as a priority in  cooperation policy for development of European Union, as included in the strategy of the United Nation´s Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for 2021-2025.
