Luanda - The representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Angola, Denise António, on Monday expressed interest in strengthening the partnership with the Ombudsman's Office, with the aim of improving the institution's performance in the defense of human rights and citizenship.
Speaking to the press at the end of a meeting with the Angolan ombudswoman, Florbela Araújo, the UN official promised resources to the ombudsman's office and to contribute to development, inclusive governance and the diversification of the economy in Angola.
Denise António said the UNDP's 2024/2028 program for Angola envisages improving the quality of services and helping to manage natural resources, in line with the best environmental preservation practices.
The UNDP official added that the institution’s program includes financial projections, which depend on the mobilization of funds.
The Angolan official on her turn said she has requested sponsorship to promote, essentially, training activities in the country and others in Africa.
Similarly, face-to-face and virtual training is planned in the environmental field and on the protection of the rights of children, women and the elderly, within the scope of the Association of Ombudsmen of Africa, with the participation of technicians of Angola’s Attorney General's Office and the Penitentiary Services.
Florbela Araújo added that the excess of pre-trial detention in the country is decreasing considerably, with the creation of a commission made up of the Supreme Court, the Ombudsman's Office, the Bar Association and prison directors and the emergence of judges of first instance court.
The Angolan official explained that she has requested the Bar Association to provide legal aid to citizens in need, although some abandon cases because they are not paid.JFS/V/TED/AMP
