Ondjiva - One thousand and 19 criminal cases from the criminal, civil, family, labor and minor forums were judged in 2023, at the Cuanhama District Court, Cunene. In 2022 the District Court judged 1,099 cases.
Among the cases judged last year, 582 are from the criminal forum, of which 283 are common, 111 are summary, 102 are misdemeanors, 48 are inspection of the coercive measure applied, 19 are conditional releases, 11 are 'heabeas corpus' and eight are abbreviated.
There are also 315 family cases, 115 civil, five minors and two labor cases.
Speaking on Friday to ANGOP, in Ondjiva, the judge-president of the Cuanhama District Court, Afonso Pinto, said that during the year, the Court worked with four thousand and 27 cases, of which two thousand and 498 carried over from 2022 and one thousand 529 new processes.
He explained that of the volume of cases, one thousand and 19 were judged, 211 ended or archived for various reasons such as the complainant's withdrawal, among others, and two thousand and 797 others are ongoing.
Regarding the generic jurisdiction room in the municipality of Cahama, the judicial magistrate highlighted the judgment of 165 cases, of which 99 were summary cases, 38 common, 17 family and work, as well as 11 civil.
The cases judged consisted of 323 cases, of which 200 were admitted in 2023 and 123 carried over from the same period in the same period, with 39 amnestied, six returned and 113 ongoing.
The judge acknowledged that the lack of magistrates in the province of Cunene, where there are only six, has been affecting the speed required in the judgment of cases.
Afonso Pinto highlighted that due to this reality, the available judges have been able to respond to the priority cases that arrive at the court, depending on the case and time.
The Cuanhama District Court, the first of its kind in the province of Cunene, came into operation in 2019, with only seven judges, including the president, six in the capital and one in Cahama.
With an area of 87 thousand and 342 square kilometers and one million and 491 thousand inhabitants, the province has the municipalities of Cuanhama, Ombadja, Namacunde, Cahama, Cuvelai and Curoca.FI/LHE/VIC/DOJ
