Cuito - More than 100 women from the province of Bié, Moxico and other regions of Angola have been registered for the tenth obstetric fistula surgery campaign, which kicked off Monday at Walter Strangway Hospital.
The information was disclosed by the head of the maternity ward of the hospital, Filipa Amaral, adding that creations have been created for the campaign to run smoothly until January 22.
According to Filipa Amaral, on average 10 to 12 women will undergo surgical intervention per day.
Filipa Amaral said that, like previous editions, the current one will have the involvement of specialists from Luanda, in a total of nine, including gynecologists, obstetricians, anesthetists and others.
In terms of preventive measures, she advised women to refrain from early pregnancy, as it is one of the causes of obstetric fistula and do not fail to attend prenatal consultations regularly.
In the first nine campaigns carried out at the Walter Strangway Hospital, opened in 2020, roughly 2,000 women from different provinces of the country underwent surgery.
Obstetric fistula surgery campaigns aim to help women suffering from the disease rebuild their lives.
Obstetric fistula is a rupture in the vaginal canal that causes urinary incontinence. It is one of the injuries caused by prolonged and obstructed births, without access to timely and high-quality medical treatment. Many women suffer from social exclusion because of it. VKY/PLB/CF/AMP
