Luanda - The advances in human genetics in Angola, in the 21st century, have created conditions to predict with greater accuracy the risk of diseases and adapt treatments based on genetic and non-genetic factors said the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Maria do Rosário Bragança.
The minister was speaking today, at the opening of the 2nd International Symposium on "Human Genetics", which is being held at the Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Cardial Cardio Pulmonary Disease Hospital Complex, in Luanda.
For the government minister, genetics can still provide effective therapies, eliminate certain diseases and prolong life.
She stressed the importance of the need for the genetic academy to play a fundamental role in the development of scientific research and the use of technologies, and cooperation, within the scope of Angola's membership of the international centre for genetic engineering and biocardiology, was an opportunity that had to be maximised among scientific researchers.
Genetics, she continued, is applied to a certain non-clinical purpose, such as solving crimes, determining paternity and ancestry, because it is the specialty that impacts on improving the health of the individual, public health and contributes to sustainable and economic development of countries.
