Luanda – The minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, visited Thursday the Serum Institute of India, a global dimension factory unit which is located in the city of Pune, in the Republic of India.
The said institute manufactures more than 30 different vaccines for the treatment of diseases, of which Angola purchases eight through United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
Currently, the Serum Institute of India is manufacturing the malaria vaccine with an efficacy of 70%.
The factory unit manufactured the largest amount of Covid-19 vaccine. It is the largest factory in the world with the capacity to produce 3.5 billion doses of vaccine per year.
The minister of Health, who is leading the Angolan delegation, at the end of the visit and the meeting with the director for International Business of the enterprise, Vijay Patil, manifested her satisfaction for the fact that this cooperation will allow the purchase of medicine more directly and the Malaria vaccine for this year.
Angola hopes to continue to be assisted by India in terms of vaccine manufacturing.
Sílvia Lutucuta said that the Angolan government wants to have a fruitful and long-lasting relationship and not only to buy vaccines, but also for Angola to start manufacturing vaccines.
“In a first phase it will probably be filling and in a more advanced phase we will be moving into a more complex process”, said the minister assuring that in the future Angola will be a power in Africa, also in the field of manufacturing human vaccines.
The Angolan delegation is taking part in the Pharma Live Expo 2023 that is being held from 1 to 3 March, at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in the city of Mumbai.
