Cuito – The Forestry Development Institute (IDF) in the province of Bié needs more than one hundred new inspectors, to reinforce the flora and fauna's inspection and protection.
Currently there are only two forest inspectors in the entire province of Bié, which has a forest coverage of 3,936,915 hectares, of which 91k hectares are considered productive.
According to the head of the IDF in Bié, Elvira Soares, the situation of indiscriminate felling of trees for the manufacture of charcoal in the municipalities of Cuito, Chitembo, Camacupa and Cuemba continues to be a concern.
Regarding poaching, she considered it less worrying, despite there being some single cases.
Elvira Soares took the opportunity to appeal for the population's collaboration in denouncing possible acts, whether of indiscriminate felling of trees or poaching,
Still, the IDF, in partnership with police authorities, municipal administrations, churches, partisan and non-political youth associations and traditional authorities, has promoted awareness campaigns on the preservation of the natural habitat.
