Sumbe – A total of 251 inmates in the Cuanza-Sul Penitentiary Service were included, last year, in socially useful activities and in the teaching and learning process, reported, on Wednesday, in Sumbe, the director of the aforementioned facility, deputy prison commissioner Luís da Costa Dias.
According to the director, who spoke at the event celebrating the Penitentiary Service's anniversary, 58 prisoners were placed in socially useful work and 171 in the teaching-learning process, between literacy and secondary education.
During the same period, he said that the province registered a prison flow of 4,154 inmates, of which 2,164 were in prison and 1,990 were released.
The Prison Service, according to the official, controls 1,119 inmates, 625 of whom are convicted and 494 in pre-trial detention.
He highlighted that the installation capacity at the province level was increased to 1,337 inmates plus 656, as a result of the recent inauguration of the Cassosso penitentiary establishment, municipality of Cela, which relieved the establishments of Sumbe and Amboim.
At the end of the activity, the provincial delegate of the Ministry of the Interior in Cuanza-Sul, commissioner Filomeno Araújo, said that the historical path of the Penitentiary Service, since its institutionalization on March 20, 1979, clearly reflects the desire of its paths of face major challenges.
