Luanda - Angola government considered the telecommunications, information and communication technologies role crucial to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

The recognition is expressed in a statement issued by the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Media (MINTTICS), sent to ANGOP on May 17, the International Day of Telecommunications and Information Society.

The note states that the government is aware of the support to the socio-economic development process, in the fight against poverty and pursuit of the Millennium Development Goals.

It says that the Telecommunications sector is fundamental in the modernisation process of governance, in the social and economic development, social inclusion, improvement of the life condition and access to information.

The note mentioned satisfactory results, fundamentally in the continuous improvement of regular and universal provision of basic public telephony services, Internet access and associated services.

The source mentioned ANGOSAT-2 launched on October 12, 2022 into orbit and in January the country witnessed the inauguration and start-up of the Satellite Mission and Control Centre (MCC), an intelligent infrastructure capable of operating several satellites simultaneously.

The document adds that, "Angola is at the helm of the Southern African Development Community (SADC)  Shared Satellite Committee and is to date the SADC focal point with the International Telecommunications Union for issues related to orbital positions.

It also highlighted the Tech-Gest technological solution, selected for the Global Top 100 of artificial intelligence projects, focused on the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as Tech-Gest.

A service that makes use of updated and high resolution satellite images for infrastructure monitoring, asset management, change detection, mapping of land use and occupation.

The government stresses the existence of 10 fixed multimedia libraries in Benguela, Luanda, Huambo, Huila, Lunda Sul, Zaire, Cunene, Bié and Malanje.

It also referred to six neighbourhood "Mobile Media libraries" in Cabinda, Luanda, Malanje, Bié, Moxico and Uige, which have increased literacy and access to information for the population that brought  a privileged space for cultural interaction.

According to the government, the launch of digital.ao, a technology incubator that focuses on providing IT facilities and support for entrepreneurship has made it possible to strengthen and expand micro and small companies and make  it easier to formalise and modernise businesses.

The Ministry adds that for the provision of more reliable information on weather and climate, as part of the INAMET modernisation project, of the 68 meteorological stations that are due to start operating in 2023, 58 of the stations have already been concluded and installed.

The government stressed that the Radio electric Spectrum Management Monitoring Centre, inaugurated in 2022, has allowed a better monitoring of the radio electric spectrum, as well as better monitoring and management of situations of interference in the civil aviation and maritime sectors and the use of broadcasting frequencies throughout the country.

The sources also mentioned fibre-optic cable, with a capacity of 200 Gbps, linking Noqui and Zaire, which constitutes a great gain for the country and will certainly improve and facilitate access and quality of services.

The ministry congratulated all telecommunications and information society bodies and operators, both public and private, paying a special tribute to the sector's staff for their work in ensuring electronic communications services and boosting electronic security.

This commitment, the note stressed, has allowed communication and access to information in the country to more than 24 million mobile phone subscribers, more than 10 million internet service users and more than 2 million pay-TV subscribers.
