Angola committed to transforming SADC Forum into regional parliament

Luanda - The National Assembly is working with the Executive to bring up the issue of transforming the SADC parliamentary forum into a regional parliament at the next Summit of Heads of State and Government of the southern region, to be held in August in Windhoek, Namibia.


The transformation of SADC PF into a regional parliament is one of the key pillars of the Angolan presidency, the theme of which will also be discussed in depth during the 43rd Plenary Assembly of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, from June 20 to July 2 this year in Angolan capital, Luanda.


The spokeswoman for the meeting, Josefina Pitra Diakité, said Friday that she sees the transformation of SADC PF into a regional parliament a way to bring the people of the Southern African region closer considering its integration.


The 43rd Plenary Assembly of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, to be held under the motto: "The Role of Parliaments in Deepening SADC's Economic Integration through Industrialization" will deepen best practices to assist Governments in the region to promote inclusion of the economies of the countries, taking into account the economic and social development of the region, through industrialization.


The event, which will be held for the second time in Angola, will be opened by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, in his capacity as Head of State of the host country and guest of honor.


To date, the participation of 12 delegations of National Parliaments members of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, including South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe have been confirmed.


Representatives of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), as guests, should also attend.


The SADC Parliamentary Forum was established in 1997 as an autonomous institution of SADC and consists of 14 parliaments from the region.
